About This Course

This course introduces civil engineers to Claude, the AI assistant from Anthropic, through the three fastest paths to first value. Participants learn how Claude differs from search engines and traditional chatbots, then apply the platform to realistic tasks drawn from the Maple Creek Bridge Replacement Project, a fictional three span girder bridge simulation with realistic documents, numbers, and problems. Module 1 covers Native Chat at claude.ai, including prompting fundamentals, structured reasoning, checklist generation, and the verification hierarchy that governs professional use. Module 2 covers Connectors, which let Claude read your working systems across Google, Microsoft, and a growing directory of engineering and business applications. Module 3 covers the browser extension, where Claude rides along as you research funding programs, permits, supplier quotes, and regulatory databases. Special emphasis is placed on verifying every number against codes and specifications, admitting uncertainty early, and treating every output as a draft for review by a licensed engineer.

Topics Covered:

  • Understanding Claude and Large Language Models for Engineering Work
  • Prompt Engineering Fundamentals for Civil Engineers
  • The Verification Hierarchy and Professional Responsibility
  • Native Chat: Structure, Synthesis, Checklists, and Decision Support
  • Claude Connectors and Business System Integration
  • Browser Assisted Research: Funding, Permits, Quotes, and Regulations
  • Ethics, Confidentiality, Privacy, and Verification

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how Claude generates responses and where the platform fits in engineering workflows.
  • Identify engineering tasks that are well suited for conversational AI support.
  • Apply effective prompting techniques to improve reasoning, structure, and output quality.
  • Analyze meeting notes, boring logs, and project records into registers, timelines, and checklists.
  • Evaluate Connectors and browser assistance for live research and system integration.
  • Assess risks related to hallucinations, unverified numbers, and confidentiality.
  • Develop verification habits that keep every AI output subject to engineering judgment.

Who Will Benefit/Target Audience:

This course is designed for civil engineers, project engineers, project managers, engineers in training, technologists, and firm leaders across structural, geotechnical, transportation, municipal, and construction practice who want to understand and apply Claude to improve productivity, accuracy, documentation, and decision support.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

No prior experience with Claude is required; however, a basic understanding of civil engineering project workflows and professional business communication will be beneficial.
