About This Course

This course brings Claude, the AI assistant from Anthropic, inside the three applications where civil engineers already spend their working day: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Using realistic scenarios from the Maple Creek Bridge Replacement Project, participants watch Claude audit, build, and explain spreadsheets while preserving formula logic; draft and populate presentation decks in place; and prepare reports, specifications, and reviews inside the document rather than beside the document. Participants learn how the Excel add in adjusts inputs, runs scenarios, drives native operations such as pivot tables and conditional formatting, and generates narrative documentation of models and assumptions suitable for audit. The course frames Claude as a fast junior engineer rather than an oracle: strong at structure, formulas, and explanation, and always subject to review. Special emphasis is placed on preserving spreadsheet integrity, clarifying ambiguous requests before acting, and treating every output as a draft for review by a licensed engineer.

Topics Covered:

  • Claude in Excel: Auditing, Building, and Explaining Spreadsheets
  • Scenario Analysis, Formula Preservation, and Model Documentation
  • Driving Native Excel Operations Through Prompts
  • Claude in PowerPoint: Drafting and Populating Decks in Place
  • Claude in Word: Reports, Specifications, and Reviews Inside the Document
  • Workflow Automation Within Microsoft 365
  • Professional Skepticism, Verification, and Quality Control

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain how Claude operates inside Excel, PowerPoint, and Word through Microsoft 365 add ins.
  • Identify spreadsheet, presentation, and document tasks that are well suited for AI augmentation.
  • Apply prompting techniques that preserve formula dependencies and existing model logic.
  • Analyze engineering spreadsheets and generate narrative documentation of assumptions and flows.
  • Evaluate when to draft decks and reports in place rather than in a separate chat window.
  • Assess automation limits, data integrity risks, and confidentiality considerations within Office files.
  • Develop review workflows that keep licensed engineers accountable for every deliverable.

Who Will Benefit/Target Audience:

This course is designed for civil engineers, project engineers, project managers, engineers in training, technologists, and firm leaders across structural, geotechnical, transportation, municipal, and construction practice who want to understand and apply Claude to improve productivity, accuracy, documentation, and decision support.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

No prior experience with Claude is required; however, a basic understanding of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, along with common civil engineering documents, will be beneficial.
