This six-hour course explains what New Urbanism is and explores five current issues: equity planning, climate planning, how freeways impact neighborhoods, land use and zoning reform, and the creation of new neighborhoods. New Urbanism is a design movement that intends to create more sustainable communities through the use of green space, transit-oriented design, and environmental justice.
The course offers an in-depth overview of how contemporary planners, architects, and policymakers are rethinking mixed-use development, walkable communities, and sustainable infrastructure. Through an examination of real-world applications and current debates, the curriculum delves into the intersection of social equity, transit-oriented development, and suburban retrofitting within the New Urbanist framework. Mr. King, AICP, Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Accredited, is a city planner and has directed multidisciplinary teams around the country and the world. He has served as the project director and prime author on over 200 plans for cities, towns, neighborhoods, and corridors. He is a Principal at Dover, Kohl & Partners of Miami. Jason’s work has focused on social, economic, and climate change resilience. Jason authored two books: The Climate Planner: Overcoming Pushback Against Local Mitigation and Adaptation Plans (2021) and The Equity Planner: Five Tools To Facilitate Economic Development with Just Outcomes (2023). Jason’s work is also featured in numerous planning texts such as Sustainable Urbanism (2007), Form-Based Codes (2008), and Street Design (2014), and he has been interviewed by the New York Times, Planning Magazine, and National Public Radio.

Ms. King is Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) Accredited and directs projects at every scale, drawing on a background in both planning and architecture. Pam focuses on form-based codes, comprehensive plans, master plans, and architectural standards and has experience throughout the United States and internationally. When not directing projects, Pam is the lead designer on illustrative plans, working closely with the public to help envision more walkable and sustainable futures. Prior to joining Dover-Kohl in 2006, Pam worked designing homes and community buildings, producing construction documents, working with municipalities to get projects approved, and working with construction managers on-site—skills that give her a valuable perspective when creating new master plans and form-based codes. Pam received her Bachelor of Architecture and her Master of Architecture in Suburb and Town Design from the University of Miami. She is a certified charrette planner and is CNU accredited.
