International Building Code – Fire Protection

This 4‐hour course focuses on Chapter 9 of the International Building Code: Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems. The course covers sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, smoke control systems, fire command centers, mass notification systems and fire areas, partitions, barriers, and walls.

Key learning outcomes include:

• Understanding the interplay between the IBC and International Fire Code (IFC), particularly aligning chapters (7, 8, 9, 10).
• Mastering the criteria for requiring automatic sprinkler systems based on occupancy classifications (Groups A, B, E, F1, H, M, R, S1) and specific hazard types, including exceptions for sensitive equipment.
• Differentiating between fire areas, fire partitions, fire barriers, and firewalls, grasping their structural requirements, continuity, and impact on building design and occupant safety.
• Interpreting the nuanced requirements for fire alarms, including manual versus automatic systems, voice alarms, and monitoring obligations across various occupancy types.
• Delving into smoke control systems, including design considerations, operational standards, the function of smoke barriers and smoke dampers, and the critical role of standby power.
• Exploring the comprehensive requirements for fire command centers in high-rise and large buildings, understanding their layout, communication systems, and the essential information required for effective emergency response.
• Introducing the latest additions to the IBC, such as mass notification systems for college campuses and specific provisions for various building elements like rubbish chutes and interior finishes.
