This course provides guidance on maintenance of a coastal building's structure and envelope. For maximum performance of a building in a coastal region, the building structure and envelope (i.e., exterior doors, windows, skylights, exterior wall coverings, soffits, roof systems, and attic vents) must not be allowed to deteriorate. Significant degradation by corrosion, wood decay, termite attack, or weathering increases the building’s vulnerability to damage from natural hazards.
Topics: Effects of Corrosion, Moisture, Weathering, and Termites Building Elements That Require Frequent Maintenance Maintenance Inspections Checklist Maintenance of Glazing, Siding, Roofs Maintenance of Exterior-Mounted Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Maintenance of Decks and Exterior wood Maintenance of Metal Connectors Hazard-Specific Maintenance Techniques Effects of Flooding, Seismic Events, and Wind.
Intended Audience: This course is intended for Construction, Civil, Coastal, Facilities, Mechanical, Electrical, and other engineers whose job description may require a general knowledge of maintaining buildings in coastal environments.
