Ageism is bias against people based on their age. It's usually applied to older people when, for example, a senior executive is let go for no good reason other than her age. Companies who dismiss older employees may use another reason for the dismissal, but job discrimination based on age cannot be denied.
It's not only older people who are the targets of prejudice based on age, however. Millennials and other young people encounter this too.
In this episode of my series “Ask the Ethics Guy,” originally presented on Bloomberg Businessweek, I respond to Dr. Tom Lanis, former Director of the Parker Ethics Center at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, who submitted the following question:
“Are there generational differences in ethical values? Some of our local employers, and some of my business school colleagues, seem to think that young people lack the work ethic of their parents and grandparents. What do you think?”
